Simultaneous Interpretation

Simultaneous Interpretation or Interpreting Services, unlike written translation, is not a literal translation of the original, it is not in written form, and it is not certified. Simultaneous translation is the transmission of a spoken message from one language to another in real time and in a precise manner through the use of audiovisual or telecommunication aiding tools.

Simultaneous Interpretation or interpretation services uses tech-tools in order to take place. During a Simultaneous Interpretation, the use of the following tools may or may not be required:  anti-talk cabin for the interpreter, translator´s console with microphone and integrated switch, base transmitter, wireless FM receptors with volume and earphone selection, wireless microphone and mixer.

Additionally, during events that require Simultaneous Interpretation for more than 4 hours, at least two interpreters must be available. This is because translating simultaneously requires huge mental efforts. It is equally important for interpreters to Access documentation or bibliographic material regarding the topic to be translated, previous to the event, since these topics are usually very specific or technical and the interpreter must be familiar to specific terminology. The interpreter must be able to study the content and/or materials to be translated / interpreted in order to eliminate possible ambiguities regarding terms and context.   This way, the interpreter may be more loyal to transmitting the original message.

Regarding technical logistics during a interpreting Services, it is important to consider the time it takes to install translation equipment. This takes approximately 2 hours, which shall be considered previous to the event, preferably the day before the event. This activity requires a technician who is in charge of manipulating the equipment and providing support in distributing and collecting translation equipment at the beginning and end of the event.

When the Simultaneous Interpretation is done one-on-one, the use of translation equipment is not necessary. In these cases, the translation is done based on the client´s needs and this type of translation is called consecutive translation. Consecutive translation is done in small groups where one person speaks, then waits for the interpreter to translate to the target language, and then continues. Whispered translation is another type of interpretation services, where the interpreter whispers simultaneously on the person´s ear in the target language.
